Social Inequality

About The Course

In the Social Inequality course, we explored various dimensions of inequality, including socioeconomic status, race, gender, and education. We analyzed the root causes and consequences of inequality, as well as the mechanisms through which it is perpetuated in society. Some key experiences included analyzing data on income distribution, studying historical and contemporary examples of discrimination and oppression, and exploring theories of social stratification. Concepts covered included privilege, intersectionality, structural violence, and social mobility. Throughout the course, we engaged in discussions, debates, and group projects to deepen our understanding of the complex issues surrounding social inequality. We also conducted research projects where we examined real-world examples of inequality and proposed solutions for addressing them. This course differed from other classes in its focus on understanding the structural and systemic roots of inequality rather than just individual-level factors. It encouraged critical thinking and provided a holistic perspective on how various forms of inequality intersect and reinforce each other. I was drawn to this course because of my interest in understanding the complexities of social issues and their impact on individuals and communities. The opportunity to explore topics such as poverty, discrimination, and social mobility in depth appealed to my desire to contribute to creating a more just and equitable society.

Importance in My Field

I discovered during this course that my greatest strengths are thorough social issue analysis and creative solution-making. But I also saw areas where I could do better in terms of expressing my ideas clearly and working with others to bring about significant change. An understanding of social inequality is important in fields such as mine eg; Criminal Justice. Professionals with these abilities are better able to recognize and confront social injustices, support underrepresented groups, and create efficient interventions to lessen inequality.

Future Goals

The research, advocacy, and critical thinking abilities I acquired in this course will come in very handy in my future career. Since I'll be employed in the criminal justice system, I believe that advancing social justice and equity will require my ability to recognize and address social inequality. I can put these abilities and insights to use in my professional life and in graduate school by researching social inequality, creating policies and initiatives to address it, and pushing for structural change. My knowledge of social inequality will guide my work and motivate me to build a more just society because of my intended career in criminal justice.
